No. 27 – Safety

Many buildings today, depending on their surroundings and context, seek to have a presence which is unique, safe and extends out into the community. Therefore a central point in modern architectural design is an all-inclusive plan perspective or in other words a holistic approach that integrates building design with social and physical environments. In an ideal world, buildings should foster both security and community.

The architect plays a pivotal role not only in the design aspect of architecture, but in the safety of the building and its impact on public health. To deploy the best health and safety practices, the architect must consider safety in design, safety during construction and safety after completion. This means foreseeing all of the “what if” situations before and during the design process for a safe and secure building. In this issue of Forms & Elements we present realisations in the context of safety – places, where safety plays an important role.
